Did you know over half of the Island is designated as an  Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with around half of our coast  defined as Heritage Coast (the country's finest sections of coast which are protected from development)?

Why not leave the car behind and explore the Island on foot or by cycle. The Isle of Wight has more rights of way per square mile than anywhere else in England. There are hidden corners just waiting to be discovered ~ and you are never far away from a country inn or tea room!

The Island has 9 longer inland walking trails including the new Yar River trail which follows the Eastern Yar River from source to sea ~ as well as the 67 mile long Coastal Path. We have a number of guides to trails on the Island that guests are welcome to borrow.

The Island is also great for cycling with a network of bridleways, country lanes and traffic-free cyce paths. A word of warning ~ the Island is not short of hills! 

History & Culture of the Isle of Wight 

The Island has a wealth or history and culture and here are just a few ideas for places to visit:

• Osborne House ~ Queen Victoria's favourite home with the magnificent grounds and walled kitchen garden which have been restored to their original spendour.

• Carisbrooke Castle ~ where Charles 1 was imprisoned just before his execution in 1649 and where the Carisbrooke Donkeys are still used to turn the water wheel.

• Morton Manor ~ It is believed the manor dates back to 1249 although there have been later alterations. Morton Manor is also reknown for its beautiful gardens and large collection of Japanese Acers.

• Brading Roman Villa ~ Learn about the Romans and discover beautiful mosaics which have been hidden until recently in an Edwardian barn but are now displayed in a new exhibition centre.

Wildlife of the Isle of Wight 

The Island is a sanctuary for wildlife and is one of the few places where red squirrels can still be found.

Enjoy Bird Watching? ~ in spring and autumn the Island is home to migrant birds from near and far.
